About

Martina De Matteo is a Neapolitan artist currently based in Ibiza.
Painting is her primary artistic language, approached through a conscious and instinct-driven practice. Each work emerges as a direct response to lived experiences, transforming contrasts into bold compositions, distorted figures, and vibrant chromatic structures. The canvas functions as a space of confrontation, where control and loss, fragility and strength coexist, and where the authenticity of gesture is at the core of the creative process.

Her visual language arises from the dialogue between Neapolitan folklore and the multicultural contexts she has lived in, including Australia, London, Berlin, and Ibiza. Tradition and contemporaneity merge into a personal symbolic system where the real and the surreal remain in constant tension.

De Matteo’s paintings operate as visual theatres, transforming intimate experiences and the situations, contrasts, and stimuli offered by the contemporary world into archetypal forms. Reality is never represented as stable, but continuously altered, expanded, and reimagined. Each work reflects the sincerity of her gaze, the desire to remain faithful to herself and her own experience.

Her practice is driven by a constant need to move beyond the comfort zone. Transformation, both in life and in painting, occurs only beyond familiar boundaries.
